Roblox Introduces Age-Based Accounts for Safer Play, Rolling Out in June

Roblox is shaking things up to keep the game world safer for kids and younger teens. Starting in June 2026, they’re rolling out new account types that split users into age groups. This means your little brother or sister won’t see the same stuff you do, and chat access is carefully controlled based on age. It’s all about making Roblox a friendlier, safer place for younger players.

Roblox now uses mandatory age checks for everyone who wants to chat. The same system decides who gets which account type. If you’re between 5 and 9 years old, you’re in the Roblox Kids group. Ages 9 to 15 get the Roblox Select account. Everyone 16 and up keeps the standard Roblox account, but only those 18 and older can access “Restricted Content” like strong violence or romantic themes.

Roblox Kids accounts are pretty locked down. Games available have “Minimal” or “Mild” ratings, meaning only occasional mild violence, some light crude humor, or mild scares. Plus, chat is off by default for kids under 9. The only way they can chat is if parents pick specific friends or family members they’re allowed to talk to.

For Roblox Select users, games rated up to “Moderate” are open, and chat with peers in the same age range is allowed. Parents can also let kids play games outside the usual limits if they want – say, a younger sibling playing a game with an older one.

How Roblox Is Vetting Games for Younger Players

Roblox isn’t just handing out these accounts without making sure the games fit the age groups. There’s a three-step screening process for any game allowed for kids or younger teens. First, developers must pass a verification process. If developers are under 16, they need ID checks or a linked parent account, plus two-step verification and a Roblox Plus subscription, which costs $4.99 a month.

Second, the games get tested by players 16 and older, who offer feedback and reports. This helps catch any issues before younger players jump in. Finally, Roblox’s own moderation systems scan the games to ensure they don’t break rules and meet the right content maturity labels.

The new accounts will launch worldwide at the start of June. Roblox is giving current users time to complete the age-check process. Until then, users who haven’t done it will only be able to play games rated for younger audiences.

This move follows some legal heat Roblox faced, with lawsuits pointing out safety concerns, like exposing kids to grooming and explicit content. So this update is a big step to answer those worries head-on and clean up the playground.

In short, Roblox is making sure kids get age-appropriate experiences, and parents get more control. It’s a fresh way to keep the fun going without the scary stuff sneaking in.
