Take-Two Cuts AI Team Months Before GTA 6 Launch

Take-Two Interactive just shook things up by letting go of Luke Dicken, their Head of AI, along with several other AI team members. This move comes as a surprise, especially with GTA 6’s huge release looming and the gaming world buzzing about AI’s role in game development.

Why Take-Two Is Scaling Back AI Despite Industry Hype

Luke Dicken, who joined Take-Two last year after years of AI work at Zynga, revealed on LinkedIn that his time – and his team’s time – at Take-Two has ended. They had been working on AI technology for game development for seven years. That’s a long time to build expertise and then suddenly get cut.

Luke Dicken posted on LinkedIn

What makes this even more eyebrow-raising is how the industry is rushing to adopt AI tools. Other companies are using AI to speed up workflows and boost creativity. Yet Take-Two’s CEO, Strauss Zenlick, has taken a more cautious approach. He recently said AI might help with efficiency, but it can’t replace the human creativity needed to build games like GTA 6.

So, it looks like Take-Two is sticking to its guns and keeping AI in a supporting role, not the star of the show.

What the AI Layoffs Could Mean for GTA 6’s Development

Take-Two hasn’t made an official comment on these layoffs yet, but the timing is impossible to ignore. The GTA 6 launch is just months away, and the company is trimming its AI staff. This hints that AI probably won’t be a big part of GTA 6’s development or features.

This isn’t Take-Two’s first recent shakeup. Back in November, Rockstar, their subsidiary and the studio behind GTA, fired some senior employees over leaks related to GTA 6. That move reportedly hit morale hard within the team.

Putting it all together: Take-Two is tightening its focus on human-driven game development and keeping AI at arm’s length. It’s a bold choice when the rest of the industry is diving into generative AI headfirst.

Whether this pays off or backfires, especially with the gigantic expectations on GTA 6, remains to be seen.
